Pont-canal de Briare

Nous avons terminé notre épopée de deux jours autour de Cosne-sur-Loire, en allant voir le fameux pont-canal de Briare. Ce pont est un monument très connu, qui a une vocation très originale, car il permet aux bateaux empruntant le canal latéral de la Loire d'enjamber le fleuve, ainsi que l'ancien canal latéral de la Loire. We finished our two day journey around Cosne-sur-Loire go see the famous Briare aqueduct. This bridge is a monument which is very original since it allows the boats along the Canal Lateral de la Loire to cross the Loire river and the former lateral canal of the Loire.



Le pont-canal est du 19ème siècle. Il a été réalisé par l'ingénieur Léonce-Abel Mazoyer. The Canal Bridge is from the 19th century. It was directed by the Léonce-Abel Mazoyer engineer.

Il fait 662 mètres de long; une longueur qui a constitué longtemps un record mondial (jusqu'en 2003). Le canal sur le pont fait 6 mètres de large pour 2.2 mètres de profondeur. It is 662 meters long, a length that was a world record during a long time (until 2003). The channel of the bridge is 6 meters wide and 2.2 meters deep.

Des bateaux passent régulièrement sur le pont. La traversée n'a pas toujours l'air évidente, certains bateaux font de curieux zigzags (pas les plus gros) et parfois touchent les bords... Boats are regularly on the bridge. It does not always seem obvious, some boats do curious zigzags (not the most larger) and sometimes touch the edges...

L'accès au canal est gratuit, nous l'avons franchi sur un des côtés, passé de l'autre en passant sous un pont sur la rive gauche, puis nous sommes revenus vers Briare. Sur le pont, plus vous vous éloignez de Briare, moins les touristes sont nombreux le long du canal... The access to the aqueduct is free, we have crossed on one side from the other, by passing under a bridge on the left bank and then went back to Briare. On the aqueduct, the more you're away from Briare, less tourists are numerous along the canal...

Si vous désirez boire un verre ou prendre une glace, allez faire un tour au centre-ville de Briare. A proximité du pont-canal, une ancienne maison d'écluse est reconvertie en snack, mais évitez-la absolument, les tarifs sont prohibitifs (bien pire que sur la place du château à Amboise). If you want a drink or a ice cream, go to the downtown of Briare. The former house of the Lock near the aqueduct is converted into a snack but it is to avoid absolutely, the tariffs are prohibitive.

A droite, vous avez une vue du centre-ville avec l'église Saint-Étienne. Right, you have a view of the downtown with the Saint-Etienne church.

Nous sommes revenus en Touraine sous un déluge, en repensant avec nostalgie à ces deux jours. Et nous avons constaté avec un grand dépit que seul 1 mm de pluie est arrivé jusqu'à notre jardin pendant ce temps... We came back to the Touraine under a deluge, with nostalgia, thinking back to those two days. And we have seen with great despite that only 1 mm of rain came to our garden during this time...
